Harriet Tubman

|
Born a slave on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom after her master failed to sell her because of her physical condition. Tubman raised money to help and house freed slaves. She was also involved in the civil war efforts of the North, acting as a nurse, cook, scout, and spy. Most notable, however, were Tubman’s many trips along the underground railroad to free slaves. She made a total of 19 trips bringing slaves to free states or to Canada.
Tubman was awarded the Silver Metal from Queen Victoria in recognition of her efforts in the anti-slavery movement. She is recognized as the greatest “conductor” of the Underground Railroad, helping thousands escape to freedom. She was known as the “Moses” of her people.
