John Peter Muhlenberg

|
| The son of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, on of the founders of the Lutheran Church in America, Muhlenberg grew up with strong religious and patriotic beliefs. After studying in Europe and pasturing multiple churches, Muhlenberg was elected to public office. He used both is position as pastor and as elected leader to convince people the necessity of fighting to preserve religious freedom in America.
Muhlenberg greatly influenced his brother, Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, also a Lutheran pastor. Together the brothers recruited many Christians to join the armed forces, convicting them of their responsibility to secure freedom for America. Frederick Muhlenberg went on to become the first speaker of the House and a signer of the Bill of Rights granting freedom of religion.

"Brethren, we came to this country to practice our religious liberties, and if we don’t get involved, we’re going to lose them.” |
