Sojourner Truth

|
Born Isabella Baumfree, Sojourner Truth was freed from slavery by the New York Anti-Slavery act of 1827. Taking one of her 13 children with her, she moved to New York City and began working for Christian Evangelists. Very quickly her speaking abilities were realized, and, after changing her name to Sojourner Truth, Truth recognized her true calling to travel the country speaking on behalf of women, slaves, and Christians.
Truth made company with both President Lincoln and President Grant, who recognized her unique ability to turn a slave’s upbringing into an inspiring public career. She is remembered as an abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and religious visionary.
